I feel insufficient to address this subject in many ways. Someone told me once two things that explain this feeling. The first thing he said was, "This doctrine is not something I can explain to you. It's something that can only be taught by the Spirit." The second thing he said was this: "The Adam/God doctrine is not about who God is, it's about what He is, and what we may one day become."
The Typical Response
So you've seen a page that talks about the Adam/God doctrine. If you're anything like I was whenI first heard this, you're either rolling your eyes and coming up with your best arguements, or you're shocked at how blasphemous I have the guts to be. I ask you, since everything about eternity lays in the ballance, to carefully consider what is being laid before you. Judge it's truth based on the Scriptures, the words of the Prophets, and the Spirit God uses to reveal all truth.
But That's not What the Bible Says
This was my first response. The Bible was so important to me, and following it was esential. And it still is. But we have to realize something that is a theme throughout the scriptures God often has His prophets speak to His people in alegories. This is a major theme in the book of Ezekiel and in Revelation. If it does not seem strange to us that the events in these books are figurative, could it be possible that Moses was speaking figuratively as well in the Genesis Creation account? Could there have been a deep and important doctrine that was treated carefully, so as not to condemn the readers of it? And if tha tis so, who would better know it than the Prophet of God? And what better time to learn it than the dispensation of the fullness of times?
It was Just Brigham Young's Opinion
Imagine with me, for a moment, that you are in General Conference, and the Prophet stands up at the podium to make an address. People have their scriptures and notebooks open, ready to take notes and absorb everything possible form what the Prophet is about to say. Noone is expecting him to give his opinion. When he is addressing the church in General Conference, he doesn't give his opinion, unless he tells you first that it is opinion, becaus ethat would be misleading. Saints at conference are expecting the word of God, not human opininion, and a Prophet of God would never mislead them in that way. So who says Brigham Young was any less responsible? Would he have stood up in conference and given a doctrine that was only opinion without saying so first? And consider the statement that wrapped up on eof his sermons on the subject. "Let him who would treat these things lightly beware, far they will prove his salvation or damnation."
Brigham Young was Misquoted
This is another arguement that is often brought up against the Adam/God doctrine. WIth research into it, though, we find something interesting. If the sermons of Brigham Young were transcribed in the wrong way, then it was a large scale error, in many different sermons. Also, Brigham Young was known to go over the transcripts of his sermons before they were published, and he went over the transcripts of the Journal of Discourses specifically. Finally, if Brigham was misquoted then he was also misunderstood by many Saints who kept journals at the time, and faithfully logged this new teaching in their writings.
The following are references to sermons made by Brigham Young regarding the Adam/God Doctrine.
